I think that a great function will be to obtain a list and or report listing what users belong to a group, location, company, etc., users just registered but not still assignated to a group

A Newsletter portlet woud be a great functionnality indeed.
It should also give to all members the permission to unsubscribe.
Who's in charge for this functionnality? It seems it has been suggested a year ago. Is something has been done yet?

In the 5.0.0+ we have Announcements/Alerts portlets which can be used for this.

They provide:

  • subscription per user, per "announcement type"
  • delivery to individual User (API only), Roles, User Groups, Communities, and Organizations
  • user choice of delivery mechanism, per "announcement type": (AND/OR), email, SMS, web (the portlet on a page is the web mechanism).
  • configurable unlimited number of "announcement types" through portal.properties
  • scoped control of who can broadcast announcements where. A user must have "Assign Member" permission on a given scope in order to be able to broadcast an Announcement/Alert.

This is good feature. It would be nice to add Newsletter portlet in 5.3.

Add vote +1.

This would be a wonderful addition. At present we are looking at other software to handle the newsletters, so to have it all 'under one roof' would be wonderful.

For info, you can make easily a basic "Newsletter" portlet, by configuring the e-mail abilities of the "Message boards" portlet:
when you subscribe to a subject, you are e-mailed of each new message... like classic newsletters !

It would be nice send newsletter using article/content system with full HTML support. Also tracing reading it would be desiderable.
