A few components need notification function, like Blog, Wiki and MessageBoard. We should centralize the notification service to support a multi-format and multi-endpoint notification.

I'm curious about what kind of notification you're referring to here. Is it email notification of updates and such?

Right, email for sure, there would also be some other kinds notification, like IM, SMS etc, and relaying to other messaging system, like JMS.
We have not fixed the requirement here, this is a feature for 6.1.x on the roadmap.
