We needed a way for several groups to use the same message board but we didn't want for users to have to wade through all the categories to get to where they needed to be.... So we took a cue after the document library and added a little bit of code from the message board move parent option and came up with this

We've actually ran into more opportunity for functionality like this... For example If a user wanted to create an image Gallery for a barbecue and wanted to put it on a page it's not possible... All the could do would be use an asset publisher or tell the users to click 5 folders down to get to it.... I really think any category or folder based content needs to have a portlet preference to default a parent just like document library..
