By default, Spring is compiled to be compatible with JDK 1.4. However, this compatibility come at the cost of not having optimizations that JDK 5 provides. Since Liferay portal requires JDK 5 anyways, Spring has been recompiled using JDK 5 so that Spring can benefit from JDK 5's optimization.
