In the WSRP portlet, a custom class can now be used to extend com.liferay.wsrp.portlet.ConsumerPortlet. Previously, the only way to modify ConsumerPortlet was to modify the class itself because there was code in the WSRP portlet that expected the consumer portlet to specifically be com.liferay.wsrp.portlet.ConsumerPortlet.
