One of the goals of Liferay Online is to "Enable increased adoption of Liferay via the cloud to facilitate selling our commercial products and services". One of the ways to achieve this goal is the creation of starter kits, that offer a themed site example that users can later customize to implement their own site, without pre existing Liferay knowledge.

Liferay Online's first starter kit has an "Academic" theme (hence the name "Masterclass").
