PNG Fix for IE6 can make the browser unresponsive on first hit

    Details

      Description

Visiting Liferay Portal in Internet Explorer 6 uses a "PNG fix" to make alpha transparencies render correctly.

Because we are attempting to applying the fix to all images on the page, it degrades the pages performance on the client side and can make Internet Explorer unresponsive. Since we are using a best effort to find all these images that need fixing, the fix misses several instances where it is required and applies fixes blindly to whatever image it can find even if the image does not use alpha transparencies. This is a major factor in the client-side performance problem for IE6.

The solution is to be specific about where such a fix belongs, so it should be up to the application\theme developer what items need fixing.

Therefore, we should remove our global fix and leave the "burden" to the developer to apply the fix. This will greatly enhance rendering performance in Internet Explorer 6.
