Problem: It's possible to start tomcat with the Liferay application but when trying to open the Liferay home page by right clicking on the Liferay Tomcat server -> "Open Liferay Portal Home", Eclipse crashes right away. I then have to stop Tomcat by using the ./shutdown.sh manually.
Workaround: Open web browser and access Liferay via http://localhost:8080/ instead

Note: During Tomcat start as well as the shutdown, the following is shown in the log
"SEVERE: The web application [] appears to have started a thread named [org.python.google.common.base.internal.Finalizer] but has failed to stop it. This is very likely to create a memory leak."
