com.liferay.portal.kernel.search.Query and its companion APIs have been around for a long time.  They have not kept pace with the advancement in search engine APIs.

There are a lot of peculiarities in the API that ties it to Indexer and makes it unsuitable for more generic search engine queries and aggregations.

 

This story looks to replace the kernel.search query and related APIs with a new set of APIs in com.liferay.portal.search. under the portal-search-api module.
