      Description

      The SO welcome theme completely hides the edit controls. This results in the effect demonstrated in the attached screenshot - if someone adds a portlet to the page, there's no obvious way to get rid of it.

      The only two ways I came up with are:

      • Firebug (removing the css instruction from
        #loginPage .portlet .portlet-topper {
            display: none;
        }
      • Temporarily activating a different theme that does not hide the edit controls.

      The reason why I'd like to see this fixed is that I believe users of SO might be less portal-savy, thus have difficulties imagining what this actually means. As the edit controls would only be seen by administrators (and the content in the site is automatically generated) I see no harm in not-hiding them in the theme. I'm open for other solutions, but I expect them to be a lot more complex.

      Another alternative might be to just hide the portlet title:

      #loginPage .portlet .portlet-topper h1 {
          display: none;
      }
